Tilt History Lesson: Before 1986, getting back points was only a one count. Why the change? The introduction of the tilt in the early 1980s, points were flying in the early 1980s with this simple move. The Rules Committee wanted to make it a little more challenging to score back points.
And I'm sure a leader of the tilt revolution was Dave Schultz, 1982 NCAA Champion for Oklahoma, and a 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist. This tilt demonstration (he calls it a hip tip) was at the 1985 NCAA Tournament National Wrestling Coach Association Coaches (NWCA) Clinic. His demonstration partner is 43 year old Joe Seay, in his first year as head coach of Oklahoma State at the time after a very successful run at Cal-State Bakersfield.
I have been to countless NWCA Coaches Clinics at the NCAAs. I haven't seen one as good as the 1985 one. Steve Frazier hitting Greco throws a year after his 1984 Olympic gold medal. Jesse Reyes hitting inside trips a year after nailing everyone on it in winning the 1984 NCAA title. And Mike Sheets showing how he destroyed the 1983 and 1984 field with his leg riding.
