Ronneburg Castle near Altwiedermus, a district of the municipality of Ronneburg in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse, is visible from afar due to its location as a hilltop castle on a steep basalt cone and gives its name to the Ronneburg hill country.

Originally probably founded in the 13th century as a Mainz castle to secure the territory, it came into the hands of the Isenburg family in 1476. It attained its greatest importance as the residence of the Ysenburg-Büdingen-Ronneburg branch line in the 16th century. The castle, therefore, has very significant Renaissance architecture, including the striking domed helmet of the keep, the Zinzendorf building, and the new bower. In the Thirty Years' War main castle initially burned out to a large extent, and a few years later, Ronneburg was plundered. In the years that followed, it lost its function as a fortification and aristocratic residence and served as a place of refuge for social fringe groups such as the Moravian Church. Its importance as a monument was recognized around 1900. Since then, the good preservation of the medieval and early modern castle buildings has made it a well-known excursion destination in the region.
