Fish feed accounts for up to 70% of the total production cost of the aquaculture business and its remain a challenge for the small scale fish farmers in Indonesia. FAO is working together with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to support the feed self-sufficiency programme for aquaculture in Indonesia with aim to produce a high quality and low-cost fish feed for Pangasius.
Prior to the project implementation, most of the fish farmers in Banyuasin District and Palembang City were feeding their cultured pangasius using commercial feeds. Now, they are able to produce their own feed from the locally available ingredients such as palm kernel meal and trash fish as well as maintaining the protein level requirements needed by their fish based on the new feed formulation introduced by FAO.
