Dunters (or powries) are goblin-like spirits of the Anglo‑Scottish Borders that haunt ruined peel towers and castles, pounding out slow, relentless thuds in the stone like flax being stamped or grain being ground. When that sound grows louder or goes on longer than usual, tradition says it foretells tragedy in the fortress—a coming death, bloodshed, or disaster that never fails to arrive.
⏱ Quick hits:
Closely related to the more murderous Redcap, but instead of personally attacking, Dunters act as echoing omens in war-built places.
Said to be the restless spirits of blood sacrifices laid in the foundations of border towers, literally built into their walls.
The name comes from “to dunt” or “pow,” northern words for banging and blows, matching their drum‑beat style warnings.
Locals feared the sound more than apparitions—no one wanted to be in a castle when the Dunter’s rhythm picked up.
Their legend turns violence into a kind of cursed music: on the Borders, even death keeps time.
