COVINGTON, Ky. (Brad Underwood) -- Its days may be numbered, but that isn t stopping a group of residents who want to save the old Bavarian Brewery from being demolished.
The owner has already filed the paperwork for the demolition and is now waiting for approval.
The building has a long history in Covington, Kentucky.
It was the home of the Bavarian Brewery for more than hundred years, and then it was the popular night club Jillian s but now it sits empty, waiting for what the future holds.
Thousands of motorists pass by it every day on I-71/I-75, but those days of seeing the historic building may soon be over.
Quietly, the four picketers stand together on 12th street in Covington.
Letting their signs do the talking, they inform drivers passing by that the historic building could soon meet the wrecking ball.
Since 2008, the former Bavarian Brewing company building has sat empty.
"It can be a lot of things, said protester Doug Newberry. I'm thinking with the resurgence of apartment buildings going on in the area. There are 10 or 12 in Cincinnati, that's a big focus."
When Columbia-Sussex bought the building six years ago, the focus was to make it a casino, but that didn t happen.
Now, the owners want to level it.
This building, even though it is a 137 years old, it's built much better than buildings are these days, said Newberry. I don't believe the owner saying it's not worth anything. I work in the construction industry as well and have been through a lot of old buildings that have been gutted down to the concrete now to the stone. They've been rebuilt and get much better. I think this building has a lot of potential in it.
The old brewery is on the national register of historic buildings.
However that designation doesn't save it from being demolished.
"I fell in love with the old architecture of Covington and Newport, said Covington resident John Ninland. I thought if I ever had a chance to move back here and buy a house, I m going to it."
John Minland moved back in 2011 and now is joining the fight to save Covington s history.
Columbia-Sussex owns the building and ultimately can do whatever it wants to do, but the next week gets a little tricky.
A Covington development plan could protect the building from being demolished
