The basic principles of a sediment particle settling in a fluid at rest were discussed in an earlier video movie. In this video, we discuss the calculations of a single particle settling velocity and a practical application.
The settling velocity of sediment particles is a key physical property, used in particular to predict the onset of sediment suspension and suspended sediment transport rate. While the present application focused on the terminal velocity of a single particle, the effects of sediment concentration and turbulence are relevant in open channel flows (Chanson 2004a, pp. 164-165). All these are discussed in a number of relevant Youtube video movies in the same Playlist at:
