The Rapid is converting its fixed-route vehicle fleet to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses by 2028. CNG is a cleaner-burning, greener fuel source when compared to diesel. The methane-based gas is usually captured from landfills and fossil fuel production sites, and produces 27.5 percent less carbon dioxide than diesel fuel, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This American-made fuel source with an abundant 100-year supply, diminishing Greater Grand Rapids’ reliance on foreign oil.
Aside from the benefits of improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gases, the switch to CNG will generate a total combined savings of $4.5 million due this fuel source costing roughly 60 percent less than diesel.
This is the first of 20 buses to be purchased in 2019.
