Charlotte, North Carolina Has A Homeless Problem Too

Downtown Charlotte. Certainly not the worst downtown you could live in or enjoy on a night out. There’s shootings and murders here just like there are in every other major metro city in the nation. But it could be far far worse.

And while there aren’t large homeless encampments here like you’ll see on the west coast, if you walk around downtown Charlotte, you’ll see homeless people all over the place. I was in Charlotte recently and spent some time looking around to see how bad things are here with the homeless population. On a quick one square block walk around downtown, I saw at least 5 people sleeping outside.

Charlotte has announced a plan to wipe out homelessness for good within 5 years. Recently, the city dismantled a large homeless encampment on the fringes of downtown and helped transition some of its homeless into shelters and drug rehab. It’s estimated that there are around 3,000 people living on Charlotte streets or in its shelters. That’s 1,000 more than there were even a year ago. 3,000 people is far less than the estimated 70,000 homeless in Los Angeles, but it’s still a very big number.

Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is, plans to spend $350 million to eradicate its homeless problem through counseling, outreach, rehab and affordable housing.

I spent some time talking with a few homeless people in Charlotte. The overall theme was troubling. All of the homeless people I talked to had their own story why they are currently on the streets. But none of them had a plan on how to get OFF the streets. All of them agreed that drugs and booze were a big part of the problem, as was finding a place where they could afford to live. Honestly, it didn’t sound like they WANTED to get off the streets. It was their livelihood now. Here are pieces of those conversations.
