Описание: We were being escorted to our hotel by a local porter who insisted that we stop at this carpet shop so his associate could take us on a magic carpet ride with his sales pitch. This is the standard "one day in two week carpet sale" pitch. We heard a version of this pitch a few times while we were there over four days. The basic pitch is that you need to buy today because these carpets are brought down from the Atlas mountains where they are made by the Berber people and that they are only there for one day. its a medium pressure technique that probably works on some people who are actually in the market for a carpet. This gentleman was very nice and this whole pitch took about 10 minutes. This is just the pitch. I am pretty sure you can buy a carpet in Marrakech 365 days a year. There is a lot of competition for your business so shop around. Prices for similar carpets can vary greatly from shop to shop. Also most small ticket items are quoted in the local currency Dirham which is about 10 Dirham to 1 US dollar when we visited. The large ticket carpets are mostly quoted in euros or dollars. So don't get too excited when they tell you 800 and you are thinking great thats only $80 in my money. They were quoting you in dollars :(. Our experience was that we ended up spending one quarter of the asking price on carpets. This is all calculated into their prices so don't feel like you are taking advantage of the shop owner by low offer. Just be prepared to buy if they accept your offer. We were told by our friend who lives and grew up in Marrakech that most of the carpets that are represented as being old are in fact new but distressed to look old.
