QuakeCoRE Seminar Series: Improving Public Behaviour During Earthquake Shaking: The Role of Risk Perception, Practice Drills, and Early Warning
Presenter: Lauren Vinnell (Massey University)
This Seminar was held on 21 February 2025.
Abstract:
Many of the injuries we see in earthquakes in Aotearoa could potentially be prevented with appropriate protective actions such as securing heavy furniture and using “Drop, cover, and hold”. However, there are several barriers to promoting these actions and therefore reducing these injuries. The first, and potentially most challenging, step is making earthquake preparation a priority for the public before the event occurs. Addressing this barrier requires understanding how the public think about, judge, and act on earthquake risk. The next step is teaching what can be done before and during an earthquake to lower the likelihood of injury, through interventions such as the annual ShakeOut earthquake drill. Adding further complexity is the relatively recent arrival of earthquake early warning in Aotearoa. This seminar will present recent and ongoing work addressing the various pieces of the puzzle of improving public behaviour during earthquake shaking.
Bio:
Lauren Vinnell is a Senior Lecturer in Emergency Management at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Massey University, Wellington. Her background is in applied social psychology and she primarily uses quantitative and experimental survey methods and behaviour change theory. Her research focuses on a range of topics including multi-hazard risk judgments, predictors of natural hazard preparation, and improving human behaviour during earthquake shaking through drills and warnings. She has worked with communities around Aotearoa as well as in the US where she is a member of the "Fellowship of the Ring of Fire" collaborative and a co-chair of the USGS ShakeAlert Social Science Working Group. For the next four years, she will be exploring risk perception and communication as part of a Royal Society Te Apārangi Mana Tūāpapa Future Leaders Fellowship.
