On November 16, 2025 AD, Dr. Hakob Simonyan was urgently called to a construction site near Yerevan, where a company preparing the ground for a large science center (an “Akademgorodok”) uncovered a 20-meter-tall stone structure resembling the Erebuni fortress.

The exposed section appeared to rise from a mass of ancient stones that included ceremonial seats, altars, pillars, and various ancient “kitchen implements.” The workers halted the machinery and contacted Dr. Simonyan at the Institute of Archaeology. Upon inspection, he suggested that the exposed complex might belong to an Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) settlement—potentially around 12,000 years Before Present.

If confirmed, this could represent one of the oldest pre-flood stone settlements presently known, with unusually well-preserved obsidian artifacts: knives, spearheads, and hide scrapers. These scrapers belong to what archaeologists classify as the lithic assemblage of early hunter-gatherer societies in the Ararat Valley.

Dr. Simonyan noted that the scrapers discovered at this Yerevan site seem specifically adapted for processing the thick hides of the megafauna of that era. Given that woolly mammoths, giant bison, and other large Ice Age animals inhabited that region at the time, the tools were almost certainly used on those species.

He expressed astonishment that such a site was nearly destroyed by construction before being properly examined. If verified, the find could significantly alter established scientific models, while deepening our understanding of Armenia’s prehistoric heritage and symbolic systems.
