B. Doyle Mitchell Jr., President and CEO of Industrial Bank, speaks to his family's legacy of building generational wealth. As a Black-owned and third-generation financial institution, Industrial Bank has spent 90 years supporting communities and working to close the generational wealth gap. Founded in 1934 by Mitchell's grandfather, Industrial Bank was created to address a critical need—providing a safe space for Black individuals to deposit their money and access loans during a time when discrimination in banking was rampant.
Today, Mitchell reflects on the bank's enduring mission of empowering communities and passing down a legacy of financial resilience and opportunity. We are committed to continuing the fight against loan discrimination, as some things remain unchanged. "The Federal Reserve has shown that Black borrowers still face higher interest rates and receive lower loan amounts compared to others," said B. Doyle Mitchell Jr. With recent investments like the Emergency Capital Investment Program (ECIP) from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and backing from major banks, Industrial Bank is strengthening its mission to provide tools for building generational wealth.
ECIP helps CDFIs like Industrial Bank by providing capital for affordable loans, small business support, and investments in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, making a meaningful impact. Industrial Bank has expanded from Washington, D.C., and Maryland to serving residents and impacting communities in Newark, NJ, and Harlem, NY, all while enhancing services through digital innovation and digitization.
