Описание: The Cathedral of St. Andrew (Duomo di Amalfi) is the religious, historic and cultural heart of the beautiful Mediterranean town Amalfi. The Cathedral, dedicated from its origins to St. Andrew the Apostle, was founded in 987, enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century and reconstructed in the 19th century. The bell tower was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and decorated with marble and majolica in the Arab-Norman style. The Romanesque façade was rebuilt in 1891 in striped marble and stone and decorated with mosaics, to replace the baroque one that collapsed in 1861. The Cathedral bronze doors are cast in Constantinople in 1060 and signed by Simeon of Syria. The Cathedral includes the adjoining 9th-century Basilica of the Crucifix, with the Crypt of St. Andrew, where his relics are kept. The remains of St. Andrew were brought to Amalfi from Constantinople in 1206 during the Fourth Crusade by Cardinal Pietro Capuano.
The Cathedral’s interior is in Baroque style, dating from the 18th century. The ceiling is decorated with paintings showing scenes from the life of St. Andrew. The central apse is supported by two ancient granite columns that were found at the Greek ruins in Paestum. The silver bust of St. Andrew dates from the 16th century.
