Ezekiel 3:17-20 is a passage where God appoints Ezekiel as a watchman for the people of Israel, emphasizing his responsibility and mission. This passage is not only relevant to Ezekiel but also provides a crucial lesson for believers today.
1. Key Messages of the Passage
(1) The Duty of a Watchman (Verse 17)
"Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me."
Ezekiel’s role was to deliver God’s warning to the people.
A “watchman” is someone who stands on the city walls to warn of approaching danger. In this context, Ezekiel was to warn the people of impending judgment from God.
Today, believers and the Church are called to be spiritual watchmen in this generation.
(2) If You Do Not Warn the Wicked, You Are Responsible (Verse 18)
"When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood."
If a believer does not warn sinners, God will hold them accountable.
The wicked will perish because of their own sins, but the watchman shares the responsibility if they fail to warn them.
This means that if people perish without ever hearing the gospel, we also bear some responsibility.
(3) If You Warn Them but They Do Not Listen, You Are Not Responsible (Verse 19)
"But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself."
Once we share God’s warning, the responsibility shifts to the listener.
We must be faithful in delivering God’s message, but the outcome is in God’s hands.
The Apostle Paul echoed this in Acts 20:26-27, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of any of you, for I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.”
(4) If a Righteous Person Sins, You Must Also Warn Them (Verse 20)
"Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood."
Even believers can fall into sin, and they must be warned.
The “stumbling block” here refers to divine testing or judgment that leads them to consequences.
Past righteousness does not erase present sin—one must continue to walk in faithfulness.
In the church, we must also lovingly correct fellow believers when they stray from God’s ways.
2. Application for Today
(1) Christians Must Be Spiritual Watchmen
We are called to know God’s Word and share it with others.
Spreading the gospel is not just an option but a responsibility.
This applies to family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
(2) Courage to Warn Against Sin
Society today embraces moral relativism, where people say, “Let everyone believe as they want.”
However, true love means warning others when they are headed for destruction.
For example, if a loved one is engaging in sinful behavior, we should speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
(3) We Must Share the Gospel with Those Who Haven’t Heard
Many people have not yet heard the gospel. It is our duty to share it.
Evangelism should include both God’s love and the warning of judgment.
Preaching only about God’s love without addressing sin is incomplete.
(4) Believers Must Stay Spiritually Awake
Even those who have followed Christ for a long time can fall into sin.
We must regularly examine ourselves, repent, and live a holy life.
In the church, believers should encourage and warn one another in love.
3. Conclusion
Ezekiel 3:17-20 emphasizes the responsibility of delivering God’s message faithfully.
As spiritual watchmen in today’s world, we must share the gospel, warn against sin, and support fellow believers.
However, if people reject the warning, the responsibility is no longer ours.
Let us remember:
"We are God’s ambassadors and spiritual watchmen in this generation!"
May we take this calling seriously and live it out.
