A number of independent record labels in 1940s America issued Armenian music whose origin was obscured by the name of not only the record label, but also that of the performer. Thus, a label with a generic name, “Popular,” issued a disc by artists with the initial “M” instead of a first name, singing Armenian standards to the accompaniment of piano and violin. The vagueness was likely intentional, as the recordings may well have been pirated/reissued from another source. [“Popular Record Company” may have been associated with Armenian immigrant record distributor and shop owner, Hrand Markar Tashjian, who ran a label called “Popular Haygagan Yerkabenag” (Popular Armenian songs on a plate). See Armenianmuseum(dot)org, article by Jesse Kenas Collins.] The Popular label issued records which appear to begin at #700 and range up to #740 or so, and may or may not be consecutive.
