Let's go back to the beginning of the year when I first tried out my new updated binaural microphone during two days of testing organized by Kateyama at Misano World Circuit. There wasn't a great variety of cars, but at least several Huracán GT3s, a Zonda Revolución and Pagani's development mule of the Huayra R Evo Roadster served as the perfect test bed for my gear. And to further increase the quality of these videos I also wanted to try shooting with the mirrorless camera that I generally only use for photos (with some mistakes in manual focus adjustments... sorry for that), in addition to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 which I later chose as the fixed instrument for the video part of my binaurals.
For those who aren't familiar with this audio recording technique, it's a special way of replicating the feeling of 'being there' simply by listening to the audio with your headphones (find more details on 'how it works' further down in the description). Generally it's applied to record relaxing nature sounds but, being obsessed with engines, I wanted to apply this method to my passion.
Please remember no one is forcing you to watch it for its entire length, especially when it comes to these binaural vids, which are all primarly for background listening.
Hope you like it!

-- What the hell is a Binaural recording? --
Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear. But that's not enough as to recreate the best effect microphones must have an 'obstacle' in their way which corresponds to our head. The physical influence from the head is the so-called Head-Related Transfer Function (or HRTF for short). This transfer function expresses how the head and ears affects the transmission of an acoustical signal from a sound source to the eardrums.
If a car passes on your left side the sound will take a few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other. This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears, so sound waves interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space. HRTF is closely related to the individual shape of the human head, thus binaural recordings sound the best if recorded using your personal HRTF. However, in general, everybody experiences a much higher envelopment of the surrounding sound/3D effect if the recording has been done with a binaural microphone, even though the HRTF is not their own.
