Vesak is the most sacred Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, celebrated on the full moon day of May. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha.
During Vesak, temples are beautifully decorated with lanterns (Vesak koodu) and colorful pandals (thorana) that display stories from the Buddha’s life. Devotees observe Sil, meditate, offer flowers, light oil lamps, and participate in religious programs. Across the country, free food stalls called Dansal provide meals and drinks to the public as acts of generosity.
