Описание: The petroleum industry in India dates back to 1889 when the first oil deposits in the country were discovered near the town of Digboi in the state of Assam. The natural gas industry in India began in the 1960s with the discovery of gas fields in Assam and Maharashtra (Mumbai High Field).
When Was Oil Discovered? The first oil had actually been discovered by the Chinese in 600 B.C. and transported in pipelines made from bamboo. However, Colonel Drake's heralded discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1859 and the Spindletop discovery in Texas in 1901 set the stage for the new oil economy.
Assam Oil Company was formed in 1889 and the first refinery in India was set up 1901.
Established in 1959 as Indian Oil Company Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Ltd was formed in 1964 with the merger of Indian Refineries Ltd. (Estd. 1958). It was originally incorporated as IOCL in 1964.

Assam is India's oldest petroleum producing state. The first oil deposits in the country were discovered near the town of Digboi in the state of Assam.
Based out of New Delhi, ONGC is a Government-owned Maharatna company that was founded in 1956. The operations of ONGC which is the largest oil company in India are centered around the extraction of crude oil and successfully accounts for 70% of the country's total oil production.
