Hi, Jesse with etrailer. Today we'll be taking a look at the Kodiak disc brake with 13 inch hub and rotor. This is gonna be a huge upgrade from any drum brakes that you might have on your camper or trailer. It's just gonna bring your trailer to a nice, controlled, safe stop and be more consistent than a drum brake system. First, let's take a closer look at all the parts. Now, I have all the parts laid out in front of me.
Just be sure when purchasing a disc brake kit like this that it will actually fit on your particular setup. This kit we have here today will only fit on a setup with 16 inch wheels, or larger, in diameter. Also, your axle need to have a capacity of 7,000 pounds and number 42 spindles. This kit will come with everything you'll need for a single axle. If you have a double axle, you will need to purchase two kits.
We'll run through the parts real quick here, starting with the caliper mounting brackets. This is going to be a ductile iron that is Dacromet-plated, so it's gonna hold up to the test of time. They've put thorough testing in these. And if you are planning on using your camper trailer for a long time, this is definitely the way to go. The only thing that will hold up better than this will be a stainless steel option, but that's gonna be a lot more expensive, and I don't think it's really worth it there.
This is the best bang for your buck by far. So all three of our components over here will be Dacromet-plated. This is the ductile iron on the caliper mounting bracket. The caliper itself is going to be cast iron and will come included with these stainless steel bolts that are already pre-applied with some Loctite for you. And the brake pads will come pre-installed in the caliper.
Moving on to our rotor and hub assembly, this, again, is cast iron, and will come with stainless steel studs and pre-installed bearing races there. Onto our bearings, these are just nice, high-quality bearings, made to fit into this hub. And they'll come with a bearing seal and a grease cap that will go on the outside of the rotor. Also included will be some lug nuts. There's gonna be enough for each stud. However, most campers or trailers these days will come with alloy wheels. So I would recommend just sticking with the lug nuts that you already have as long as they thread onto the studs that are on the Kodiak kit. There will be a couple things that you'll need to purchase separately from the kit to get everything working properly. One will be some for our bearings here. You'll have to pack these bearings. And you'll also need a grease gun to use with the Zerk fitting that's in your spindle already. So those are available here at etrailer. And also you will need an actuator to push hydraulic fluid to the brakes to make them work. You'll just need to make sure that you have an actuator that's capable of at least 1,500 PSI. Today we'll be using the Hydrastar electric over hydraulic actuator for disc brakes. One more thing to consider is your lug pattern. The kit we're using today is 8-by-6 1/2. The way you would measure that is just of course counting your studs, we have eight. And then measuring from the outside edge of a stud to the center of the stud, opposite of it. We're seeing more and more people that want to convert their trailers to disc brakes. It comes with a lot of positives. It's gonna bring you to a more safe, controlled stop, and your stops will be more consistent. So if you're just looking for a nice quality ride, this is definitely the way to go over drums. They're also gonna be a lot easier to maintain. They're the parts are easier to replace. And another positive is you can check on your pad life anytime you want just by simply looking through the wheel, and you'll be able to see that outer pad and how much life it has on it. There's also just gonna be less parts to replace. And there's reasons why we're seeing nowadays on cars, they've almost all converted from drums to disc brakes, like this here. That's just 'cause it's just a much better design. It's gonna keep your brakes cool. The way that they do that is air's gonna constantly be pushing through here to the pad and the inside of the rotor itself is actually vented. So there's holes going all along it and air is able to pass through that. And also with this Kodiak set, the caliper mounting bracket has a little channel built into it that's designed to push air directly to that inner
