Their military prowess was evident in 137 BC when the Roman consul, Gaius Hostilius Mancinus, upon learning of approaching Cantabrian reinforcements, surrendered his 20,000-strong army during the siege of Numantia. However, their resistance to Roman expansion ultimately led to their downfall. Emperor Augustus, in response to their continued defiance, launched a series of campaigns against them, known as the Cantabrian Wars (29-19 BC). The Cantabrian Cavalry prioritized speed and maneuverability. Their mounts were small, agile, and well-suited to their mountainous terrain. This, coupled with minimal armor, allowed them to strike swiftly and disappear before heavier forces could react. Their primary weapons were the javelin for harassing enemies from a distance and the falcata, a curved sword for close-quarters combat.

Their tactical brilliance was evident in their unique fighting style. They excelled in hit-and-run tactics, unleashing volleys of javelins and then swiftly retreating. Their most famous tactic was the "Cantabrian Circle," where horsemen formed a rotating circle, each throwing a javelin as they passed the front before cycling back. This ensured a constant barrage of projectiles while minimizing individual exposure, a tactic later adopted by the Romans.

Beyond skirmishing, they excelled in reconnaissance, raiding, and disrupting enemy formations. Their ability to lure enemy cavalry away from the main battle line allowed their commanders to dictate engagements on favorable terms.

Despite their ultimate defeat, the Cantabrian Cavalry left an indelible mark on military history.
