The action of the game Blood is set in a dystopian world (alternate history), similar to the USA at the beginning of XX century (in the sequel Blood II: The Chosen the year 1928 is indicated). The protagonist is named Caleb (born in west Texas in 1847). At the age of 17, he participated in the American Civil War and later had a reputation as a ruthless gunfighter. After 7 years, he met the beautiful Ophelia and fell in love with her. It is from her that he learns of the growing religious cult of the Cabal, which he and Ophelia later join. Caleb, Ophelia, and two other adherents of the cult, Gabriel (Gabriella in the second part of the game) and Ishmael, become the cult's chosen ones (The Chosen). However, after some time, the dark deity Chernobog, whom the cult worships, fearing Caleb's growing influence, accuses him of treason and instructs his minions to kill him.
