At Sardar Patel Zoological Park, we regularly provide species-appropriate enrichment to promote the physical, mental, and behavioural well-being of our animals.
In this session, a cognitive and tool-use enrichment was provided to our Orangutan. A plate containing eight paper cups filled with different taste-based natural ingredients—coriander paste, tomato chutney, mosambi juice, neem paste, tulsi paste, tamarind chutney, amaranthus paste, and methi paste—was placed outside the enclosure.
The Orangutan successfully used sticks as tools to access and sample the contents, demonstrating problem-solving ability, coordination, learning, and decision-making. During the activity, he showed clear taste preferences, eventually avoiding neem, amaranthus, and coriander after initial sampling.
Such enrichment activities encourage natural behaviours, cognitive stimulation, and curiosity, while also helping caretakers understand individual preferences and behavioural responses.
