Why does the US Navy need a railgun ?

One of the main advantages of a railgun is its ability to launch projectiles at extremely high speeds, which could potentially enable the Navy to engage targets at much greater ranges than is currently possible with traditional guns.

It’s a dangerous item to have onboard any ship and each of the many hundreds of rounds must work perfectly or else the gun may be more of a danger to the ship and crew than the enemy.
