To mark Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in January 2026, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto and the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance hosted a panel on disease modifying therapies for Alzheimer’s disease in Canada, including recently approved treatments such as lecanemab.
Most current Alzheimer’s treatments focus on symptom management and do not slow disease progression. Disease modifying therapies are different. They aim to slow the disease by targeting underlying brain changes, such as amyloid buildup.
These therapies offer new hope, while also raising important questions. Who may be eligible. What testing is required. How access and funding may work in Canada. What benefits and risks people and families should understand.
In this panel, experts and people with lived experience discuss:
What disease modifying therapies are and how they work
Who these treatments may be for and how eligibility is determined
What testing and monitoring are involved
How access and funding may work across Canada
What slowing disease progression may look like in daily life
This webinar is part of the Advances in Dementia Research series, hosted by TDRA in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
