Cogworks | Jazz Bassoon Quartet

Описание: I have talked to many bassoonists who are interested in jazz but have never had the opportunity to play it. Not to mention there is not a lot of jazz repertoire for the bassoon out there and only a few jazz bassoon players in the world. So, I decided to create a piece with jazz influence for bassoon! When writing Cogworks, I wanted to give the bassoonists who are interested in jazz a chance to make music, as I think the timbre of the bassoon would blend great with other big band instruments.

One problem I constantly thought about when writing this is drums being too loud. This is probably another reason bassoon isn’t included in big band rep. To accommodate this, Cogworks could easily be expanded to bassoon choir. This would require doubling on certain parts, particularly 1st and 3rd. The contrabassoon part can be subbed at for a bassoon 4 part if none is present, as this recording shows.

I haven't talked about the drumset yet but this is a crucial part of making this piece feel authentic. In big band, the drummer is one of the most important players as they are our rhythmic foundation. For the bassoonist who have never swung before, which is many, the drummer is your best friend!

Cogworks is inspired by classic jazz tunes, such as: “Sing sing sing” (Benny Goodman), “Powerhouse” (Raymond Scott), “It Don’t Mean a Thing” (Duke Ellington), and many others. I fell in love with jazz because of some of these songs and I wanted to capture that within my piece.

Cogworks will have its first performance on Oct. 10, 2024 at the University of Alabama’s Spectrum concert! And another thanks to Laura Fell for playing bassoon on this project!
