Three Indian states, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, have now cracked down on analogue paneer, a processed substitute that looks like traditional paneer but is made using vegetable fats, starches and other non-dairy ingredients.
But is analogue paneer actually unsafe? If it is legal under FSSAI rules, why are states banning it? Why has it become so common in restaurants and catering businesses? And how can consumers tell whether they are eating real paneer or a cheaper substitute?
In this video, ThePrint's Sneha Richhariya explains what analogue paneer is, why it has become popular across India's food industry, what triggered the recent state-level bans, the concerns over misleading labelling and consumer deception, what doctors say about its nutritional value and health impact, and how consumers can identify analogue paneer before buying it.
