Why New Music Sucks?

Have you noticed that artists and their songs are becoming more and more similar to one another?
There is a reason for that, and if we don’t want to end up listening to basically the same song forever we need to understand the difference between a piece of art, and a Product.

A product is something made with the purpose of satisfying a consumer's need so that they buy it. On the contrary, a piece of art, it's main purpose is to deliver someone’s emotional expression.
And this is a very important difference.

Now, I am not saying art can’t be made to be sold or that artists shouldn’t take in consideration their audience’s tastes, I’m saying the end goal, the reason for its existence in the first place is to deliver an emotion

When we create a product, the process starts with:
Analyzing the consumer.
What does the consumer like? What does the consumer buy?
So when we create products, we give to society what THEY are asking for..

On the other hand, when we create art, we start from the inside of ourselves:
What do I feel? What do I need to get out of my system? What do I feel society needs to hear?

Now, because the artist is also part of society, he or she will also be influenced by the same things as everyone else, music, art, religion, politics etc, but the difference is that in a piece of art, the creator will blend their own experiences, emotions and style into the mix before delivering the output.

Products, when disguised as art are dangerous, they provoke a loop in our growth,
we consume this,
they make more of this,
we consume it again,
they produce it again,
and we can be stuck there for decades. This is what is happening in the music industry.
In the Latin music industry, for example, it used to be that a new rhythm and music style would come out every couple of years going from Rumba, Chacha, Mambo, Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Axe, Lambada, Bachata, Reggaeton, but then we got into the loop, Reggaeton started in the late 90s, and hasn't left not because is better then other styles but because the industry is cloning itself.

But think of the impact of artists like The Beatles, Bob Marley, Nirvana, David Bowie, Radiohead. They were mirrors of society, they gave us the tools to see ourselves and understand ourselves, our needs and our struggles.

Artists like that are still around and always will be, but it’s on us to support them, to give the space for art to continue existing and to help us evolve into a better society.
