Jason Holder and Mitch Owen Post-Match Press Conference – WI vs AUS 1st T20I, July 21, 2025
Australia began their T20I series against West Indies with a thrilling victory at Sabina Park, Kingston, and the post-match press conference featured two key figures from both sides—Jason Holder for West Indies and debutant Mitch Owen for Australia.
Jason Holder reflects on West Indies’ collapse
West Indies veteran Jason Holder was candid in his assessment after the hosts’ narrow loss. Despite promising half-centuries from Shai Hope and Roston Chase that helped them to a strong position at 132/2, a sudden collapse in the death overs saw them slump to 167/8.
“We were in a great position to push past 180, even close to 200,” said Holder. “But losing six wickets for 35 runs in the last five overs really hurt us. You can’t let that happen against a side like Australia.”
Holder, who bowled with control and picked up two wickets—nearly achieving a hat-trick—credited Australia for staying calm under pressure. “They executed better than us at the back end. I thought our bowlers did well initially, but Owen and Green took the game away.”
Despite the disappointment, Holder remained optimistic. “It’s a long series. One match doesn’t define us. We’ve got match-winners on this side and we’ll come back stronger in the second game.”
Mitch Owen dazzles on debut
On the other side of the dressing room, it was a dream debut for 23-year-old Mitch Owen. The Tasmanian all-rounder played a defining role in Australia’s chase, scoring a quickfire 50 off 27 balls and sharing a match-turning 80-run partnership with Cameron Green.
“I just wanted to go out there and play with intent,” Owen said. “Even though we were four down for not much, the message from the team was clear—stay positive. I backed my instincts and thankfully it worked.”
Owen hit sixes with ease, including launching his very first scoring shot for six off Andre Russell. When asked about being compared to Ricky Ponting and David Warner—who also scored fifties on T20I debut—he responded with humility.
“Being mentioned alongside those names is surreal. I’m just grateful to be in this squad and contribute in any way I can. The support from the coaching staff and the senior players made it easier to settle in.”
In addition to his batting, Owen also picked up a wicket, showcasing his all-round potential. “I enjoy being involved in all facets. Whether it’s with the bat, the ball, or in the field—I want to make an impact.”
Match Recap
Batting first, West Indies reached 167/8, with Hope and Chase anchoring the innings. But their momentum was disrupted by disciplined Australian bowling, especially from Ben Dwarshuis and Jason Behrendorff. Australia’s chase looked shaky at 78/4, but Owen and Green’s counterattack put the game back in their favour. The visitors completed the chase with seven balls to spare.
Looking Ahead
Holder acknowledged the areas West Indies need to improve—particularly their finishing with the bat and composure in pressure situations. “We’ve got the skills, but it’s about executing under pressure. That’s what wins you matches at this level.”
For Owen, it was a night to remember, but he remained focused. “I’ll enjoy this win with the team tonight, but we’ve got more matches to play. I want to keep pushing and contributing.”
With the series now tilted in Australia’s favour, the second T20I promises another exciting chapter as West Indies look to bounce back and level the series at home.
