I designed the light fixture in Fusion 360, around a pendant light cord kit and vintage-style LED light bulb (links below!). These light bulbs are great for bedroom reading lights because they produce really warm, cozy light and have a relatively low light output (only 250 lumens).
My initial idea was to have patterned cutouts on the 3D printed lampshade, but no matter how I adjusted the cutouts, I wasn't happy with how it looked. The design was too busy, and looked a bit like a trashcan (or according to Eden, a traffic cone). Plus, this style of lampshade would take ~21 hours to print, with lots of awkwardly placed supports.
Cutting the lampshade into rings, separated with small spacers, was a much more attractive design, used less material and was easier to make with a 3D printer. Rather than using cutouts to create a pattern, I staggered the spacers to spiral up the lampshade which created a really cool, minimal effect. I printed each ring at 100% infill with my Prusa i3 MK3S 3D printer (0.15mm layer height). Each ring took 1.5-2 hours to print, and even with the taper towards the top of the lampshade, only the "cap" on top required support material.
When I was first designing the reading light, I was planning on printing it in PETG, since it has better resistance to high temperatures than PLA. However, after testing the LED bulb, I realized it puts out so little heat that PLA would be sufficient. This white Sunlu PLA was perfect for the reading light. It matches our white walls without clashing, and when the light is on, the shade takes on a cozy, warm glow.
I designed and printed a ball and socket joint to mount the reading light. Integrating screw holes into the joint made for a really low-profile wall mount that hides the screw heads! The joint works really well, and its tightness is fully adjustable! I printed these parts at 15% infill.
I'm super happy with this reading light - it really adds to the clean, hygge vibe of our bedroom (both on and off), and provides the perfect amount of directional light for reading. I love how you can see the spiral filaments of the edison bulb through the side of the fixture, and the rings create really cool shadows.
