This video is about the plot by the New Guard in 1931 to kidnap the Labor Premier of NSW, Jack Lang, his ministry and senior police officials, and hold them in the old Berrima gaol, while taking control of Sydney in street-by-street fighting and introducing a semi-fascist state.
It discusses the attempt to stop Lang from opening the newly built Sydney Harbour Bridge, culminating in the sword slashing efforts of Francis de Groot and how Lang thwarted his own kidnapping by driving his private car, rather than using his official vehicle.
It provides the social context for the later dismissal of Lang's Government in May 1932.
