The UC Student-Run Free Clinic (SRFC), a clinic for underserved populations in Cincinnati, was featured on CNN.
Dr. Espinola has been serving as a faculty advisor for the SRFC since 2016 and actively worked with them to establish a free clinic at the Healing Center in Springdale, OH. The UC Student Run Free Clinic opened its doors in July 2019 to serve uninsured and underinsured people in Cincinnati, particularly Latinos. About 96% of Latinos in this area have reported experiencing barriers to healthcare, and Spanish speakers have reported lower satisfaction with healthcare services than bilingual or native English speakers. Ohio ranks 46 out of 50 states on health value and health behaviors, 44 in conditions and diseases, and 40 in overall health and well-being. This is partly due to barriers to healthcare access faced by underserved populations, especially Latinos and African Americans, and partly due to Ohio’s emphasis on downstream healthcare (i.e., lack of adequate primary care and prevention). By 2025, Ohio will have a primary care physician shortage of 13.1% . Student-run clinics are shown to increase student interest in working in primary care and with the underserved after graduation. The SRFC received the "Nuestra Familia" Award by the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission in October, 2017. The honor is given to individuals, companies or organizations that have performed service of exceptional benefit to Ohio’s Latino community.
