Jackson was founded in 1848 as mining camp. The camp was named for a local lawyer, Alden Appol Moore Jackson, who was well liked by the miners in the town. Jackson grew quickly. By 1850, its population was 1,500. Jackson was also a convenient stopover on the road from Sacramento to Southern California.
Before European conquest, these lands were occupied by the Northern Sierra Indians, who lived along rivers and hanted, gathered herbs, and gathered acorns.
