Kurnool is the judicial capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also the 7th largest city of Andhra Pradesh. It served as the capital of the former state of Andhra State (953 - 1956). Headquarters of its eponymous district, the city is often referred to as The Gateway of Rayalaseema. As of 2011 census, it is the seventh most populous city in the state with a population of 457,633. It is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. Although the area has been inhabited for thousands of years, modern Kurnool was founded in the 16th century CE with the construction of the Konda Reddy Fort.
