As the tenure-track job market slowed from a trickle to a drip due to pandemic-induced hiring freezes, ABDs and early-career PhDs have spent the past year wondering about their future and taking a hard look at their options. In this session that is part personal reflection, part practical advice session, the LASC Post-doctoral Associate, Lisa Carney, discusses how the pandemic disruption of her own professional plans became an empowering experience allowing her to reconnect with her goals and values and re-imagine her career with a PhD. Based on her work supporting dissertation writers through the UMD Graduate School Writing Center’s Dissertation Success Program, as well as conversations with members of the LASC community, Lisa will address common concerns that PhD students express about their future, and suggest tactics to begin a fruitful, career exploration. Although prepared for graduate students, all members of the conference and community are invited to attend.

Lisa W. Carney is a Post-doctoral Associate for the Latin American Studies Center, as well as the coordinator of the Dissertation Success Program for the Graduate School Writing Center. She received her PhD in May 2020 from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, where she specialized in indigenous cultural production, contemporary Latin American literature and Quechua language narrative from the Andes and Amazon region. Her dissertation, “By the Authority of Dreams: Truth and Knowledge in Kichwa Muskuy Narratives” examined how verbal artistry and linguistic elements contribute to credibility and authoritative knowledge in Kichwa-speaking communities of the Ecuadorian tropical forest.
