Find and Modify Solid Hole Features - What's New in Mastercam 2024

Mastercam captures information about holes in solid geometry for defining toolpaths using a solid hole feature, and Mastercam 2024 offers more control and automation than ever. If a hole is created in Mastercam natively, the hole can be defined to fit your specific needs, including adding a countersink, counterbore, or even just a small chamfer to deburr the edge. Solid hole features have received several enhancements, but they are even more helpful for imported files where no hole information exists.

Holes that are imported from other file formats often lack full details or do not reflect the realities of machining. If an imported file's hole does not precisely match a standard drill size, it can be modified in the hole feature to the size that will be machined. If a note is used to call out a deburr or chamfer to all holes but the geometry does not reflect it, the chamfer must be added manually by the operator, which can introduce potential errors. Hole features can be modified to include these additional specifications, making down-stream machining operations faster and easier.

To recognize and modify a hole that was imported from another design tool, you can follow the process shown in this video:
1) Run the Find Holes (Model Prep tab) command to recognize all holes or selected holes that need to be modified and later programmed.
2) Open the Solids tab and find the holes you want to modify - Edit Parameters
3) Modify anything needed about the hole. Set the diameter to the drill size you want to use, add near- and far-side features such as countersink, or set the depth as needed.

By fully defining these hole features, the geometry will accurately reflect the intended machining approach and the hole features and geometry can be referenced directly in the toolpath definitions so there is no confusion about the intended result.
