(8 Nov 1987) QUOTE REF TUNISIA: Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali has become Tunisia's second
SYND president since independence from France in 1956. In his
18.11.87 statement on taking power, Ben Ali promised to reform the
LN125723 authoritarian constitution to allow more political and press
freedom. He said that he would promote bills allowing the
creation of other parties. He also paid homage to previous
president Habib Bourguiba but said that his old age had made
him incapable of carrying on his duties.
