I hope you enjoy this two part series walk we did in Norfolk. This is very close to Caister and Great Yarmouth.

TG 41 NE SOMERTON EAST SOMERTON

2/41 Burnley Hall 20.2.52 G.V. II* House. Early C18. Brick with slate roofs. 2 storeys and dormer attic arranged in H plan. South front of 7 bays with centre 3 bays recessed. Side bays project and have rusticated brick quoins. Central late C18 open pediment doorcase with 2 unfluted columns supporting Doric block entablature. Door converted to a window, but retains its wavy fanlight. Late C19 plate glass horned sashes to ground floor. Wide platband between floors. 7 late C18 first floor sashes with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. Central first floor window retains original flush surround and is further enriched by shouldered brick architrave. Roofs are hipped. 4 gabled dormers with sashes, 2 on main roof and one each on projecting side bay roofs. 5 large multiply- flued stacks, those to east and west gables partly-external. All rebuilt 1982. To east a single storey extension (billiard room) of 1816 : 3 tall late C19 sash windows. Dentil eaves cornice below parapet. Glazed hipped roof. Separate entrance in angle with main block. Platband at first floor of house continues into returns, riding over external stacks. Returns are in 4 bays. Subsidiary western entrance with late C18 fluted Doric portico porch. Door is panelled with panelled reveals. 2 sashes to ground floor of west return and 4 to first floor, all with late C18 glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. 2 gabled dormers as before. East returns similar but with plain doorway and cluster of 2 storey C19 additions obscuring half of facade. Rear largely a jumble of C19 additions but H plan still apparent. Interior. Hall, now lounge, fitted with raised large frame panelling. 2 6-panel doors within shouldered surrounds. Shouldered panelling acts as fireplace overmantel. Moulded cornice. Dining room has similar, stained, panelling. Dado panelled vertically. Moulded cornice. Windows with H hinges to original shutters. 2 other ground floor rooms similar. Open well staircase rises to attic with closed string and heavy irontwist balusters. Moulded handrail and square newel posts. Dado panelling to walls.
