Seniors, you haven’t ridden a bike in 10, 20… even 40 or 50 years. Can you really ride an electric trike?
Stick around to find out.
Hey everyone, I’m Dustin. I’ve spent over 20 years in the bike and e-bike industry, and today we’re answering one of the most common questions we hear from seniors:
“If I haven’t ridden a bike in decades… can I actually ride an electric trike?”
If you’re over 60, 65, 70, 80—or even in your 90s—and you’re looking for a way to keep your body moving, get outside, and feel independent again, this video is for you.
In this video, I’m showing two of our most popular electric trikes for senior riders:
The Relaxed Body Semi-Recumbent E-Trike
The Simple Glide E-Trike, which comes in several variations
Both are linked in the description below if you want to learn more.
What We See Every Day with Senior Test Riders
At our showroom, we host test rides almost every single day. We regularly see riders in their 60s, 70s, 80s—and yes, even riders in their early 90s—getting on an electric trike for the very first time.
And here’s the key thing most people don’t expect:
👉 A large percentage of our senior riders haven’t been on a bike in 10, 20, 30, or even 40+ years.
Some are transitioning from two-wheel bikes or e-bikes because they no longer feel safe balancing. But the majority are people who simply stepped away from cycling a long time ago and are now looking for a safer, more comfortable way to get back into it.
Why Being “Off a Bike” for Decades Isn’t a Deal Breaker
Riding a trike is completely different than riding a two-wheel bike.
You do not have to balance
You do not need momentum to stay upright
You do not need strong legs
You do not need recent cycling experience
In fact, sometimes forgetting how to ride a two-wheel bike actually helps—because you’re not fighting old muscle memory. A trike has its own learning curve, but it’s simpler in many ways.
Most riders adapt quickly:
Some feel comfortable in 30 seconds
Some take a few minutes
Others need a few rides or a few days
That’s all normal.
Stability, Steering, and Confidence
On an electric trike, the trike balances itself. Your job is simply to steer.
Many seniors initially worry about tipping or turning, especially if they remember leaning on a two-wheel bike. The good news is:
You don’t need to lean
Taking turns slow and steady keeps everything stable
Wide tires and low center-of-gravity designs make a huge difference
This is why geometry and design matter—and why not all trikes are created equal.
Electric Assist Changes Everything
This is where electric trikes really shine for seniors.
Even if:
You’ve lost leg strength
You haven’t exercised in years
You struggle walking but can still move your legs
You can still ride.
Electric trikes allow you to:
Use pedal assist to reduce effort
Use the throttle so the trike moves even if you don’t pedal
Let your legs move gently without bearing load or pressure
Your legs don’t have to control speed or power. The trike does the work—you decide how much (or how little) effort you want to give.
Why Model Choice Matters
If you’ve been off a bike for a long time, choosing the right trike matters more than anything.
Models like the Relaxed Body and Simple Glide are especially popular with seniors because of:
Stable geometry
Comfortable, supportive seating
Fat or wide tires
Easy mounting and low step-through design
These features dramatically reduce the learning curve and increase confidence.
