There’s a common misconception that doctors in Australia are paid a government salary through Medicare.
We are not.
Most GPs work under a fee-for-service model.
That means:
• A consultation has a fee
• Medicare provides a rebate to the patient
• The patient may pay a gap if the clinic charges above the rebate
The rebate does not go into a doctor’s “salary.” It contributes to:
• Reception and nursing staff wages
• Rent and utilities
• Medical equipment
• Insurance and indemnity
• Software systems
• Accreditation and compliance
• Ongoing training and CPD
• Superannuation and tax
GPs are usually contractors or small business operators — not salaried government employees.
Medicare sets the rebate amount.
Individual clinics set their fees.
Understanding this helps explain why bulk billing is becoming harder to sustain and why fees may vary between clinics.
This page is for education — always speak to your own clinic about their specific fee structure.
