Humans have been building and rebuilding that agreement for seventy five thousand years using cowrie shells, cacao beans, hazel sticks, limestone discs, and clay tablets — long before the first coin was struck. The barter origin story is a myth invented in seventeen seventy six, and what actually came before money is far stranger and more ingenious than the textbook ever suggested.
Key lesson: Understanding what came before money reveals what money actually is at its core: a community agreement about value, not a substance with intrinsic worth. That is as true of the dollar today as it was of a cowrie shell three thousand years ago.
