The International Convention on Assistance & Salvage from 1910, revised 1989 (or as it is known by its long Title "Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules with Respect to Assistance and Salvage at Sea" is one of the most important conventions as it is due to this legal framework, that for the first time in history, masters are required by law to assist ships in distress.
But what exactly is Salvage anyways?
Check out this video to get more information on salvage and how this convention set the ground work for all Search and Rescue related Conventions and Regulations, still used today (such as SOLAS, IMO SAR Convention, UNCLOS and the IAMSAR Manuals).
Visiomare is a company founded by me - Juliana Schmidt-Theurer, an ex-employee from the MRCC Bremen in Germany and current trainer for SAR Courses/ OSC Courses.
I worked for several years on a cruise ship, the "MS Bremen" from Hapag Lloyd Cruises as the navigation Officer. This used to be the expedition cruise liner (mean while replaced by the Hanseatic Nature/ Inspiration), with cruises in the Arctic, Antarctic, Amazon River as well as the South Pacific. Later I switched my job at sea for the MRCC BREMEN in Germany, where I worked for five years, first as a Duty Operator (BREMEN RESCUE) and later as a Duty Officer - coordinating search and rescue missions. During that time I also worked in a simulator center to train the search and rescue personell from the DGzRS in IMO certified courses like On Scene Coordinator and Search and Rescue Basics.
