The convergence of Earth intelligence, Internet of Things, and Big Data is increasingly shaping our society and driving demands for instantaneous, ubiquitous, and high-bandwidth connectivity. The current appetite for data is tremendously exceeding the capacity of traditional radio-frequency (RF) satellite communications, making the transition to laser-based (optical) interplanetary internet essential for space exploration and future multi-planetary operations.
The rising demand, coupled with diminishing barriers to entry for satellite operators, brought about by various deregulation, is elevating the role of satellites in humans’ lives. The proliferation of billions of connected IoT devices, smart cities, and industrial automation is creating a "tsunami of data" that requires sophisticated, real-time processing. This creates a high expectation for instant data access, regardless of location.
Laser-based interplanetary internet, which utilizes high-bandwidth optical (laser) communications to connect space assets, is enabling faster data transmission over millions of kilometers, far exceeding radio frequency capabilities. Laser communication (optical communication) is the critical, non-negotiable solution to various challenges of radio frequency, providing the "backbone" for future space exploration.
Laser-based, or Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC), uses infrared light beams to transmit data at speeds 10 to 100 times faster than conventional radio, enabling real-time, high-definition communication across the solar system.
NASA has demonstrated deep-space laser links, such as transmitting video from 19 million miles away at 267 Mbps, with potential for future Mars, moon, and asteroid missions.
