Authorities allege that Kassotis killed his wife, Mindi Mebane Kassotis, 40, and dumped her dismembered body in the woods of Liberty and McIntosh Counties on December 2, 2022. But Mindi wouldn’t be identified for five months, until DNA testing confirmed her identity in May 2023.

By then, Nicholas, 43, had already left Georgia. He was captured in Pennsylvania on May 12, 2023, and extradited to face charges.

Prosecutors say the motive centers on money and deception. Months before the murder, Nicholas had been ordered to pay his ex-wife a $1.5 million divorce judgment. He and Mindi had been living “off the grid,” allegedly to avoid paying up. But instead of confronting the debt, prosecutors claim Nicholas killed Mindi—and within days, was shopping for condoms and deodorant before heading off to be with another woman: Samantha Colsmith, who is now his current wife.

The defense disputes that story entirely, blaming a mysterious man named “Jim McIntyre” for controlling the couple’s finances and movements.
