Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) was one of the preeminent Polish composers of the 20th century. Born into a wealthy family, Lutoslawski fled his native Poland with his family during World War I to live in Moscow. In Russia he began his music education. After the 1917 Russian Revolution, the family returned to Poland only to find that the land they had once owned had all been stripped away from them. At the start of WWII, Lutoslawski joined the Polish Army and was captured by the German army. He managed to escape from his German captors and spent the rest of the war eking out a living as a cafe pianist and writing his music secretly. After the war, he continued to write music and gained success as a composer, although he frequently ran afoul with the Communist/Stalinist authorities in Poland for his modernist compositions that were not in-line with Communist artistic orthodoxy. Later in life, as Poland gained greater independence, he was able to have increased freedom in his compositions. He died of cancer in 1994.
His Concerto for Orchestra was completed in 1954. It brought him significant critical attention in the classical music field. While this was the "B" side of this LP with Ozawa and the Chicago Symphony - by the time this album was re-released on CD in the 1980s, Lutoslawski's work had been replaced by a piece by Bartok.
