The Amaravati region is understood to be a historical site dating back to the rule of the Mauryan emperors and even earlier. Examining the inscriptions found in this area, including those of the Mauryans, it is evident that kings named Kubera and Sada ruled here. This strengthens the belief that they were the kings of the earlier Ikshvaku (Ikaku in Pali) Kammakara dynasty. Only one inscription of the Satavahana king Pulomavi has been found here. Numerous inscriptions of the Ikshvaku emperors have been unearthed during excavations in this area. In the pre-Christian era, it was known as Dhanyakataka. During the time of the Durjaya dynasty's Kamma kings, it was called Dharanikota. Over time, during the rule of Venkatadri Naidu, Dharanikota transformed into Amaravati. The last king to rule the Amaravati principality was Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu. Amaravati attained great glory under Naidu's rule.

Land acquisition for the new capital was carried out in a new way, primarily by providing plots in the developed city. The then Union Minister for Urban Development, M. Venkaiah Naidu, laid the foundation stone for the Andhra Pradesh administrative building complex on October 28, 2016. In January 2016, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the temporary secretariat building complex. Although it was planned for the administration to operate from there by June 2015, it was only realized by October of that year.
