I have the Google Pixel 8 here and in today's video I'll be talk about what Rescue Mode is, what it's for, and how I personally access this special boot mode. I'll also go over how to exit this mode just in case you tried it out one day but don't actually need to use it for anything.

Rescue Mode is a special menu for Google's Pixel smartphones and tablets that allows you to troubleshoot and repair your device. A big feature that leverages this seems to be a 1st-party repair tool website directly from Google, but it mainly seems to be used for sideloading OTA updates without needing to install ADB or Fastboot tools on your PC.

This feature was launched back in 2016 but has largely gone unnoticed by most people until a couple of years ago.

Here's the website you will use Rescue Mode with.

It will ask you to backup the data on your phone first.
Then connect it to the PC with a USB cable.
And then boot into Rescue Mode so that the website can communicate with the Pixel 8 here.

If you've used the Android Flash Tool website then you'll be familiar with this interface.

So the question is, how do we access Rescue Mode on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro?
This process is rather straight forward but it may seem strange to you if you've never accessed Fastboot Mode before.

Because that's the first thing we need to do here.

Now, we cannot interact with the phone using the touchscreen here. So instead we'll be using the hardware buttons.
Volume Up and Volume Down will control which option is highlighted here.
And we will need to press the Power button to select the option that is on the screen.

So we're going to press the Volume Down button a few times until we see Rescue Mode highlighted.
Then we'll press the Power button to boot the Pixel 8 into Rescue Mode.

If you followed all of the steps today and you see a screen that looks like this, then you've done everything correctly.
For some reason, Google has recycled the Recovery Mode splash screen image so be sure to not get this confused.
Hopefully we'll see this image updated in a future release so that it's less confusing.

But this is where you would connect the phone to the PC, open up that Pixel Repair website, and then sideload a new OTA update.
Or calibrate the fingerprint software.
Or even lock the bootloader.

There are a few features offered by the Pixel Repair website that can be useful for those who do not want to install ADB/Fastboot tools on their PC. Or those who cannot due to operating system restrictions.
