Description:
In April 2024, six people were killed in a knife attack at Bondi Junction.
Following the release of the NSW Coroner’s report, this video examines the psychiatric care of Joel Cauchi and asks a harder question: what can psychiatry — and our health system — realistically learn from this case?
I discuss schizophrenia in the community, voluntary vs involuntary treatment, early warning signs, the limits of risk prediction, and the challenges faced by community mental health teams.
This is not a blame-focused video. It is a doctor's perspective on complexity, uncertainty, autonomy, and safety.
Content warning: discussion of violence and severe mental illness.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. (Insert crisis resources here.)
