Evoking a chilling sense of coldness, Richard Min’s newest collection of pieces, appropriately named “Caelum”, considers the vast expanse of the desolate world we find ourselves in. Influenced by Mary Shelley’s 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯 (1818) and the original twelve preludes, Min fully embodies the frightening bitter bite of winter’s grasp.

00:00 — “Arctica” was inspired by Captain Walton from Shelley’s magnus opus. Envisioning the scenery of a lone traveler breaking the ice in a midnight Arctic, “Arctica” rivals previous works, such as “Slumber”, in capturing the surprising peace of being in utter isolation, far removed from any other living being.

02:54 — “Vespera” paints colorful chords as a prelude to the main theme, reverberating sustained sounds throughout a gloomy, snowy forest. Fog seeps in and out before the piece closes with a dissonant resolution. “Vespera” was inspired by Victor (created by Shelley).

06:00 — “Umbria” darkly plays its flickering melody in a gothic room dominated by an antique, out-of-tune piano. In a room where the warmthless indoors is just as chilly as the cold outdoors, it’s not difficult to imagine the inspiration from Frankenstein’s monster.

09:46 — “Crystalina” fantasizes a hidden lake, lost to the environment that nurtured it centuries ago. Originally “Sparkling Lake” from “12 Preludes”, “Crystalina” was the first piece of Min to be featured on the channel. Its significance is as wide-ranging as the sweeping glissandos that close off the prelude, a cascading conclusion to a piece of pentatonic tones and sonorities.

12:15 — “Torrentia” was the other original piece of “12 Preludes” that is re-envisioned in its full form. A minimalistic, repeated pattern is maintained throughout the piece, simulating a rain-swept street.

14:27 — “Ad Nihilum” perhaps features the most unique music in the video: it was the very first piece that Min ever improvised. One rainy October afternoon in 2019, Min sat down and recorded “On Light and Dark”, which is known today as the piece you are listening to. In an epic contrast between all that is bright and all that rests in the shadows, no better imagery captures “Ad Nihilum” than the transition from night to day, the shade receding and the light dazzling the Earth.

With these six pieces, it becomes easy to not only understand, but also feel the meaning of Caelum: heaven and sky. In a metaphoric archipelago of music, Min takes the best and foreshadows greater works to come.
