Curator of Cartography Megan Barford reveals one of the most beautiful maps in the National Maritime Museum collection.
Made in Venice in 1555 by cartographer Battista Agnese, this ornate map of the Indian Ocean turns once practical features of early navigational charts into sumptuous decoration.
This is just one map selected in new book A is for Atlas: Wonders of Maps and Mapping, looking back through the history of maps, charts, globes and atlases from the thirteenth century to the present day.
