Isaiah 6:1–13 is Isaiah’s call story, and it’s intense.
Isaiah sees the Lord on a high throne, with God’s robe filling the temple. Seraphim (fiery angels) worship and cry, “Holy, holy, holy,” and the place shakes as smoke fills the room. Isaiah immediately feels exposed and unworthy: “Woe is me… I’m a man of unclean lips,” and he knows he lives among people who are the same.
One seraph touches Isaiah’s lips with a burning coal from the altar, symbolizing that God cleanses him—his guilt is removed and his sin is forgiven. Then Isaiah hears God’s call: “Whom shall I send?” and Isaiah answers, “Here am I. Send me!”
God gives Isaiah a hard assignment: he will speak to people who keep hearing but don’t understand and keep seeing but don’t truly perceive—because their hearts have become stubborn.
